Basic Academic Accessories: Graduation Cords and Medals

Graduation cords and medals are few of the many things that are associated with the term graduation. These items are prominent during academic formalities and they are commonly seen worn by students along with the other academic items. They come in various colors styles and designs. The graduation cords are those long intertwined strands which are knotted in the middle part with tassels attached at each ends. The cords for graduation can either come in one single strand or in pairs. It can have one shade of color or a combination of two colors. They are worn around the neck with the tassels hanging loosely on the front area. The medals on the other hand are neck pieces that include a shaped metal (usually round ones) that are attached to a neck ribbon. Medals customarily come with a silver, gold or bronze shade of metal and they are worn over the neck, above the academic gown with the shaped metal being shown off. The neck ribbons of these medals can come in many different colors and an individual can use both the cords and medals during the academic occasion.

Both the graduation cords and medals can imply various things. Some of the implications that these things commonly share are:

1. Academic achievements – In both instances the cords and medals are commonly used to denote a person’s academic achievements. People who have acquired remarkable academic accomplishments are awarded with either graduation cord or a medal. Those students that had gained the title summa cum laude, magna cum laude, valedictorian, salutatorian or those that graduates with honorable mentions are bestowed with these items to feature their academic success. The usage of these items generally depends upon the academic institution.

2. Distinct accomplishment in other fields of discipline – Medals and cords are also used to award students that have shown outstanding fulfillment in extracurricular activities or those that have shown excellent attainment in certain subjects. They are given to people that had excelled in the fields of arts, music, spelling, drama, choir membership, those that have shown great leadership, involvement in the student council, individuals that do extremely well in particular study such as Physics, Mathematics, English etc.

3. Indicate the status as a graduate – Graduation cords and medals are also worn by students to highlight their status as graduates. Some medals have the word “graduate” imprinted or engraved on it together with the school year. Some schools or universities require their students to wear these items before the ceremony proper but there are other academic institutions that award these items in the middle of the occasion.

4. Group affiliation – These academic pieces are also used to denote membership in certain groups or societies. Individuals that are affiliated with a particular organization wore a cord or a medal that indicates their attachment to such assembly. Several medals are imprinted with the group’s logo or name on it.

These academic items are indeed significant pieces. They may not be part of the basic academic regalia, but the role they play in the ceremony is significant and they are a great way of recognizing one’s success.
